Mid-Year Transitions at MYIS – How We Support New Students

Many international families move abroad at different times throughout the year, and transitioning to a new school can be both exciting and challenging, especially for children joining mid-year. At MYIS, we recognize that every child’s journey is unique, and we take great care to ensure each new student feels supported both academically and socially from day one.

When a student joins us mid-year, our leadership team carefully reviews their previous school records and meets with the family to learn more about the child’s academic background, learning style, and individual needs. Teachers begin by helping students settle into their new environment, prioritizing comfort and connection before formal assessments begin. During this initial period, our teachers observe and monitor each student’s engagement, learning habits, and social adjustment.

Student Support

Once the student feels at home, the teaching team, together with our Student Support Team, conducts informal assessments in key areas such as reading, writing, and mathematics. This helps us develop a clear understanding of the student’s current learning profile and identify any areas that may require additional support. Depending on the results, we may consider classroom differentiation, English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, or Learning Support to bridge specific academic gaps. Counseling & Other Support

Our school counselor also plays an essential role in ensuring a smooth and welcoming transition. The process begins with orientation, during which the counselor partners with the admissions team to welcome the student, introduce them to key areas of the school, and review daily routines. To promote a sense of belonging, each new student is paired with a buddy who guides them around campus, answers questions, and helps them connect with peers. The counselor also organizes a “new student lunch,” offering a relaxed space for newcomers to meet one another and for the counselor to learn more about them. Beyond orientation, the counselor checks in regularly, both formally and informally, to provide social and emotional support, and meets with teachers to discuss each student’s strengths, interests, and areas for growth. At MYIS, our approach ensures that every student is met where they are, provided with the right kind of support, and empowered to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
