Grade 6 students participated in a Writing on Demand task as part of their writing development. They were given a 30–40-minute time frame and a prompt to produce an informational piece explaining a process.
This task promoted student agency by allowing learners to choose a topic they felt confident and passionate about, allowing them to showcase their voice and interests. It also served as an authentic exercise in time management and organizational skills, requiring students to plan, structure, and complete their writing within a set period. Throughout the activity, students demonstrated increasing independence in outlining their ideas, using transitional phrases, and considering their audience and purpose. Topics ranged from how to cook a favorite dish to playing a sport or organizing a game.
