In Grade 4 the different reading levels of each student are accommodated through using a small group structure. Students are grouped with peers who are reading at the same level and/or who have similar reading goals, allowing the teacher to use resources that meet their individual requirements and allow students to feel successful. The teacher works with each small group throughout the week to provide targeted reading instruction while the co-teacher supports the students working independently. Students are empowered to apply skills such as self-management, communication and problem solving as their work both independently and together.
