MYIS Teachers Create Calm Down Corners

Our specialist teachers at MYIS participated in a professional development session on Positive Discipline strategies, focusing on Positive Time Out and Wheel of Choice. These are social-emotional learning (SEL) tools that help students self-regulate. For Positive Time Out, students design a space filled with pleasant things to help them calm down until they can access their rational brains. The Wheel of Choice is a decision-making tool that empowers students with important social and life skills by giving them autonomy to resolve conflicts, manage their emotions, and make positive choices independently.

The goal of these sessions is to create consistency across the school in using Positive Discipline approaches, so that students experience a coherent and supportive framework for self-regulation and decision-making, no matter which teacher they interact with. This alignment reinforces the skills students are learning both in the classroom and throughout the school day and fosters a sense of belonging and significance.
