On the evening of October 8th our teachers and parents came together for an inspiring and eye-opening workshop centered around Supporting Language Learners. Our workshop leader, Mr. Tan Huynh, serves as the EAL consultant at MYIS, with an abundance of experience working with schools around the world to enhance language acquisition. Mr. Huyhn shared that at MYIS our goal is to promote a multilingual and multicultural student body, moving away from valuing English and Western culture only. He explained that the priority at MYIS is to develop critical thinkers who understand and participate in the academic program. One key takeaway for many parents was the importance of developing home language in order to support English language acquisition. Parents were encouraged to read books, have conversations, and tell stories in their home language so that students come to school with a highly developed schema and stronger “language muscles.”
