In this week’s Community Member Profile we’ll get to know our C&S Head Teacher a little better…
Name or Nickname:
Meredith
MYIS Position / Job title:
Head Teacher of Creativity & Service, and Early Years Coordinator (starting January 2022)
How long have you been a part of MYIS?
17 months
What passions do you bring into the classroom?
This is tough to narrow down! One of the things I love about my job is that it encompasses a lot of things I am passionate about. Firstly, I am passionate about working together as a community and building trusting and caring friendships. I really value and cherish the friendships I’ve built throughout my life and I hope the same for the students in my class. I am also passionate about the joy and challenge of trying new things, taking risks, and thinking creatively. We celebrate this throughout our learning in Creativity and Service. Lastly, I enjoy teaching my students mindful practices and different ways they can regulate their emotions and communicate their feelings. Mindfulness is something I learned as an adult, but wished I learned when I was a child.
What’s your favorite food?
I love Mediterranean food: hummus, pita bread, olives, etc.
What was your first job?
I started working when I was 14. I was a bus girl at a restaurant (cleaned and cleared tables). Eventually I became a waitress. I worked in restaurants for over 10 years to help support myself throughout my studies. My patience, communication skills, and ability to adapt and multitask are a direct product of that.
What’s your favorite color?
My favorite color is yellow (sunset yellow)
What’s the most amazing place you’ve ever traveled to?
Five years ago I did the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal with two of my childhood friends. The Himilayias certainly know how to make you feel small!
What are 3 things you would want to have with you on a deserted island?
My contact lenses, goggles, and a kindle.
What actor would you cast to play you in a movie about your life?
People have told me I look like a young Sigourney Weaver. (insert shoulder shrug)
